About Us

About Us

Crag Stewards Victoria is all about climbers taking action to protect the cultural and environmental values at the places we love to climb for future generations to enjoy.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of this country and their continued connection with it over thousands of years. We pay respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Objectives:

  • Establish a Network of Crag Stewards
  • Assess and monitor the impact of climbing on cultural and environmental values
  • Collaborate with Traditional Owners and Land Managers
  • Promote understanding and respect for traditional cultures
  • Encourage best climbing practices with the climbing community

Structure

Our network of stewards is structured around the 11 regions of Victoria that correspond to the recognised country of Traditional Custodians. This allows stewards in each region to understand and comply with the plans and expectations for the treatment of country for each Representative Aboriginal Party.

Crag Stewards are allocated to popular climbing areas in each region and their work is supported and overseen by a Regional Steward and the overall coordinator of our program, the Steward Coordinator.

We aim to listen and learn about how we can act, communicate and influence to support the protection and growth of Culture, Community and Country.

Relationships

CSV works closely with and is well supported by the Victorian climbing community and the climbing organisations within it.

We are an active participant in the peak representative body for outdoor climbing, climbing Victoria.

We work closely with Parks Victoria and other land and park managers and have formed some direct and indirect relationships with Representative Aboriginal Parties across the state.
